Prefixes

Group your services into prefixes, rename or delete them, and choose which prefixes each service belongs to.

A prefix is a named group of services, like a project: for example "Production", "Team A" or "Singapore services". Every machine, database and bucket you create lives in a prefix, and people only see the prefixes they are attached to. You manage prefixes in Organization SettingsSuper PrefixesPrefixes.

Each prefix has a Name you choose and a Super Id the system gives it.

Create a prefix

  1. Open Organization SettingsSuper PrefixesPrefixes.
  2. Click Add Prefix.
  3. Type a name in Prefix.
  4. Click Add.

The new prefix appears in the list. To use it, attach it to yourself and your team: see Give people access to a prefix.

Name prefixes after how you work

Pick names people will recognise in every service's Prefix list: a project, an environment, a team or a region.

Rename a prefix

  1. Find the prefix in the list and click ActionEdit.
  2. Change the name.
  3. Click Edit.

The Super Id doesn't change, so services and people stay attached.

Delete a prefix

This can't be undone

Before you delete a prefix, move or remove the services in it and check who is attached to it on Prefix Users. The console doesn't warn you about what's still in the prefix.

  1. Find the prefix and click ActionRemove.
  2. Check the Super Id and name in the Warning! box.
  3. Click Delete.

Choose which prefixes a service belongs to

A service can belong to more than one prefix, for example a database shared by two teams. Organization SettingsServices Prefixes lists every service with its Name, Super ID, Type and Prefixes. Services are created on their own screens; this screen only links them to prefixes.

  1. Open Organization SettingsServices Prefixes.
  2. Find the service and click ActionEdit.
  3. To add a prefix, pick it in Attach Prefix and click Add.
  4. To remove a prefix, click the red × in its row.
  5. Click Update.

The service now belongs to exactly the prefixes in the list. Close discards your changes.

Keep at least one prefix

If you remove every prefix and click Update, the service no longer belongs to any prefix, so nobody can find it through a prefix. Leave at least one in the list.

Good to know

  • The Prefixes list, and the Prefix lists elsewhere in the console, show up to 50 prefixes.
  • Use the table's search box to find a prefix by name.

Troubleshooting

  • "unauthorized" or "unable to process request". Your organization role doesn't allow this change, or the name was rejected. Try another name, or ask an administrator (roles).
  • I created a prefix but can't see it on the Machines screen. It isn't attached to you yet. See Give people access to a prefix.
