Set up your account

Complete the four setup steps so you can start creating machines, databases and other services.

Before you can create machines, databases, load balancers, firewalls, Kubernetes clusters or AI services, your account needs four things: billing details, a payment method, a prefix, and that prefix attached to you. It takes about five minutes.

Open the checklist

Click Setup in the top bar. The checklist also appears by itself, in place of the screen, when you open one of the services above before setup is complete.

  • "Please complete setting up your account." Some steps are still red.
  • "Your account is Active." You're done.

Each step is red with a button while it's incomplete, and green with Completed and a Review link when it's done. Work through them in order.

The checklist doesn't refresh by itself

After you complete a step, click Setup again to see the updated checklist.

Step 1: Basic profile settings

  1. Click Update next to Basic profile settings. Settings opens on the Billing tab.
  2. Fill in your billing details. The Email field is the one this step needs: invoices and billing messages go there.
  3. Click Save changes.

See Billing details for every field.

Step 2: Add the payment method

  1. Click Add next to Add the payment method. The Payment Methods screen opens.
  2. Add a card. See Payment methods.

Step 3: Create prefix

A prefix is a named group for your services, such as "Production" or "Team A". Every machine, database and bucket lives in a prefix.

  1. Click Create next to Create prefix. The Prefixes screen opens.
  2. Click Add Prefix.
  3. Type a name in Prefix and click Add.

More in Prefixes.

Step 4: Attach prefix

Creating a prefix doesn't give you access to it yet: you also attach it to yourself, with a role.

  1. Click Attach next to Attach prefix. The Prefix Users screen opens.
  2. Click Modify Prefix and Users Link.
  3. Pick your prefix in Select Prefix and a role in Select Role. To create services, pick a role with full control (MANAGE or SUPER).
  4. Pick yourself in Users and click Add.
  5. Click Modify.

You'll see "Successfully attached." More in Give people access to a prefix.

This step is per person

Each person in your organization needs a prefix attached to them. Someone you add to the organization sees this checklist instead of the services until a prefix is attached to them.

What happens next

Click Setup: it should say Your account is Active. You're ready to launch your first machine.

Storage, functions, CDN, traffic profiles, key pairs, event logs and the platforms in Enterprise Platforms don't wait for this checklist.

Troubleshooting

  • Step 1 stays red. Check that the Email on the Billing tab of Settings is filled in and saved. The Account tab doesn't count for this step.
  • Step 4 stays red, but the prefix is attached. It's attached to someone else. Check that your email appears with that prefix on the Prefix Users screen.
  • "unauthorized" Your role doesn't allow this change, or something you entered was rejected. Ask an administrator, or see Users and roles.
