Payment methods
Save the card or mandate your account is charged from, choose the default, and remove methods you no longer use.
Your account is charged automatically from its default payment method. You add, change and remove methods in BillingPayment Methods.
Adding a payment method is step 2 of Set up your account. Until you have one, screens such as Super MachinesMachines show the setup checklist instead.
What you'll see
The page lists your saved methods in a table:
| Column | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name | The name you gave the method. |
| Details | A masked number, for example xxxxxxxxxxxx1234 for a card. A UPI or bank mandate shows a short description such as "UPI ab***@okhdfc". |
| Gateway | The payment provider that holds the method, shown as a badge. |
| Default | A green Default badge on the method that is charged. |
| Action | Make Default and Remove. There is no Action menu on the default method. |
If you have no methods yet, the table reads "No data available in table".
If your account can hold prepaid credit, a Wallet balance box appears above the table. See Add funds.
Add a payment method
- Open BillingPayment Methods.
- Click Add Payment Method.
- Type a Name you'll recognise, for example "Company Visa".
- If a Pay with choice is shown, pick how you want to pay. It only appears when your account offers more than one payment provider.
- Enter the details for the option you picked (see below).
- Tick Make it Default if this method should be charged from now on.
- Click Add.
Read the note at the bottom of the dialog before you click Add. It tells you the small amount that will be charged to verify the method, for example "Note: You will be charged {amount} for verification purposes.", with the real amount filled in. If the console can't reach the billing service, it shows "Note: A small amount will be charged to your card for verification purposes." instead.
Your card number never passes through the console. You type it into the payment provider's own secure field or window.
Add a card
When the dialog shows Card Details:
- Type the card number, expiry date (MM/YY) and CVC into Card Details. Some cards also ask for a postal code.
- Click Add. The button is greyed out while the card is checked.
- If your bank asks for a one-time passcode (OTP) or approval, a window from your bank opens on the page. Complete it there.
The console makes the small verification charge to prove the card works. When it succeeds, you'll see a confirmation message, the dialog closes and the card appears in the table.
If your bank's check opens in a new browser tab instead, that tab shows "You are being redirected..." and closes itself after a second. The card is then saved as normal.
Save a card, UPI AutoPay or net banking mandate with Razorpay
This applies only if your account offers Razorpay. The dialog then shows Save for automatic payments when Razorpay is selected under Pay with, or on its own when it is the only option. If you only see Card Details, skip this section.
- Under Save for automatic payments, pick the type of method. Your account may offer some or all of these:
- Card: "A small verification charge saves the card for automatic billing."
- UPI AutoPay: "Approve the AutoPay mandate in your UPI app. A small verification charge applies."
- Net banking e-mandate: "Authorise a mandate with net banking. There is no charge; your bank confirms it (this can take a few days)."
- Click Add. The dialog closes and Razorpay's secure checkout window opens.
- Finish in the checkout window: enter your card OTP, approve the AutoPay request in your UPI app, or sign in to net banking and authorise the mandate.
When it succeeds, you'll see a confirmation message and the method appears in the table. If you close the checkout window before finishing, nothing is saved and no message appears. Start again from Add Payment Method.
On a phone, a tablet or an in-app browser, checkout takes over the whole page instead of opening a window. When you finish, you come back to Payment Methods and see one of these messages:
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| "Payment method added successfully." | Done. The method can be charged. |
| "Payment method added. It is waiting for confirmation (bank / UPI app) and can be charged once confirmed." | Saved, but your bank or UPI app still has to confirm it. See Methods still being set up. |
| "Payment could not be verified. Please try again." | The payment didn't go through to the end. Add the method again. |
| "Payment was not completed (cancelled, OTP or bank approval failed). Please try again." | You cancelled, or the OTP or bank approval failed. Add the method again. |
It is safe to close the tab once you have paid. The method is still saved in the background.
Methods still being set up
A UPI AutoPay or net banking mandate is only usable once your bank or UPI app confirms it. Until then the row shows a badge next to the gateway (hover over it to see "Bank confirmation of the auto-pay mandate"):
| Badge | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Being set up | The verification payment went through; the mandate is being attached. | Reload the page in a minute. |
| Mandate pending | Waiting for your bank or UPI app to confirm. A net banking mandate can take a few days. | Wait, and check your UPI app or bank for a request to approve. |
| Mandate followed by another word, in red (for example Mandate rejected) | The mandate can't be used. | Remove it and add the method again, or use a different method. |
If the Action column shows "Refresh in a minute", the method is still being saved. Reload the page later to see its actions.
Make a method the default
The default method is the one your account is charged from.
- Find the method in the table.
- Open its Action menu and click Make Default.
The change applies straight away, with no confirmation. The Default badge moves to that row.
Remove a payment method
The default method has no Action menu, so you can't remove it directly. Add another method if you need to, make it the default first (Make a method the default), then remove the old one.
If you remove the last valid method, automatic charges can fail. See If a payment fails.
- Find the method in the table. It must not be the default.
- Open its Action menu and click Remove.
- In the Warning! dialog ("Are sure you want to remove?"), click Delete.
The method disappears from the table. To use it again later, add it again.
Troubleshooting
- A red message about the card, for example "Your card number is incomplete." The card details are wrong or missing. Check them and click Add again.
- "Card verification (OTP) failed." The bank's passcode check failed or was cancelled. The card was not saved. Try again, and contact your bank if it keeps failing.
- "Card verification was not completed (...). The card was not saved." The verification charge didn't go through. Try again, or use another card.
- "Stripe is not available right now." The card form couldn't load. Check your connection, turn off any blocker for the page, and reload.
- "Unable to load Razorpay Checkout" The checkout window couldn't load. Check your connection, turn off any blocker for the page, and reload.
- "Payment failed" (or a message from the checkout window). The payment provider declined the verification. Try again or use a different method.
- The Pay with choice or a payment option I used before is missing. The billing service may be briefly unavailable, and the console then offers cards only. Try again later.
- I can't find Remove on a method. It is your default. Make another method the default first.
